Twilight is the first of a series of fantasy/romance films based on the novels written by Stephanie Meyer about a teenage girl named Bella, played Kristen Stewart, who moves from Phoenix Arizona to live with her father in Forks, Washington.
Life is boring in Forks, Until one day Bella has her life saved by a ridiculously attractive boy, Named Edward, played by Robert Pattinson. Right from their first meeting, Bella is completely enamored with Edward because, Edward is nothing like any other boy she’s ever met before! Of course, Edward fancies Bella too, and sparks fly between the two. But Edward is hiding a dark secret. You see, Edward is immortal, as in, a Vampire. and since this is a romance, and geared towards young girls, he’s the kind of vampire that doesn’t appear to have fangs, or thirst for human blood, or even die when out during a sunny day. But his skin sure does sparkle when in the sun! He also hasn’t aged a day since 1918. Not bad looking for a guy that’s a little over 100 years old! But hey, age is just a number when it comes to true love, right?
Of course, Bella is just the kind of girl Edward has been yearning for his entire undead life.
Twilight was released in late 2008, on a budget of about $37 million, and it grossed over $191.5 million. But why? The majority of fans of “The Twilight Saga” are made up of pre-teen and teenage girls, and boyfriends that let their girlfriend pick the movie. and girls seem to relate to a character like Bella; she’s kind, sweet, caring and funny. so we have a character that the targeted audience (younger females) can identify with. And most girls seem attracted to bad boys, and it would seem to the casual observer that vampires are the ultimate when it comes to bad boys; they only come out at night, they drink blood, and it takes a stake through the heart to kill them. But at the same time, Edward isn’t evil, and never hurts Bella: instead he goes out of his way to protect her, so its a”safe” relationship, yet still has all the excitement that being with a bad boy would have. Much like being on a roller coaster, or in a haunted house, there is excitement, without any real danger.
In this case, Edward is a roller coaster in a haunted house; Edward is also forbidden fruit, since Bella’s friends and family don’t approve of the relationship, so this makes the relationship between the two even more exciting to the viewer.
Lets not forget that Edward is extremely attractive. And like all vampires, Edward has great fashion sense, wearing clothes that show off his body to a tee, and what girl wouldn’t want a guy that looks like Edward?
So, the Twilight movies are doing everything right to get girls to go to the theater, and to the malls to buy Twilight-themed merchandise. And girls will keep doing it until Twilight ends. And as long as Twilight is a hit, they’ll find ways to keep it going for as long as possible.
